A thermally insulating shell is manufactured by impregnating with a binding agent a web 1 of fibres, e.g. woven or non-woven natural, synthetic, or mineral fibres such as a glassfibre fabric or glass-felt matting; covering one side of the web with a layer 2 of flexible porous insulating material, e.g. a blanket of mineral wool or glass fibres; bringing the layer 2 into contact with a former 4 and the web 1 into contact with a mould 3 which at least partly surrounds the former, hardening the binding agent, and removing the shell so formed from the mould. The binding agent may be a cold- or hot-hardening synthetic resin, a liquid thermoplast or bitumen, and may include fillers, pigments or dyes. The shells, which as described are either semi-cylindrical, as shown, or in the form of a split hollow cylinder, are used to insulate pipes, the adjacent edges of a pair of semi-cylindrical shells or of the split in a cylindrical shell being bound together by a strip of adhesive tape once the shells or shell are in position on the pipe.
