Abstract
1,114,968. Mercury switches. SIEMENS A.G. 21 Dec., 1966 [22 Dec., 1965], No. 57086/66. Heading H1N. A mercury switch operable in any attitude independently of gravity comprises a drop of mercury 8, Fig. 1, contained in a chamber 3a of an insulating housing 3 and deformable into engagement with an orifice edge of a fixed contact plate 5. The other contact comprises a plate 7 closing the chamber 3. The mercury is deformed by electromagnetic or mechanical pressure on a flexible diaphragm 2 enclosing a fluid chamber I having a communicating passage 3a through which the pressure is;transmitted to the surface of the mercury 8. A further flexible diaphragm 4 may be inserted to prevent physical contact between the fluid and mercury. Restoring force is provided solely by surface tension of the mercury. More than one switch may be coupled to the fluid chamber 1 for simultaneous operation.
