Abstract

1,114,290. Testing cigarettes. HAUNIWERKE KÍRBER & CO. KOMM.-GES. 14 Dec., 1965 [23 Jan., 1965], No. 52986/65. Heading A2C. Apparatus of the kind in which cigarettes or the like are deposited in grooves of a conveyer and tested by introducing an air current into the ends of the cigarettes which are sealed on the outer surface by sealing means disposed at the ends of the grooves, is characterized in that a resilient annular sealing member is provided and is arranged to be engaged by pressure exerting means capable of changing the internal diameter of the sealing member. As shown in Fig. 2 the sealing means are mounted on a drum 600 and consist of valve sleeves 636 and slide valves 684 located therein. The slides are operated by a cam and follower 638 arrangement against the action of springs 642. Each slide includes a ring 628 which, when the slide is moved to the right as viewed in Fig. 2, passes over the end of a cigarette group G to be tested. Within a chamber 604 in the slide an annular sleeve 606 is located around which is disposed a resilient tube 602. In the testing position compressed air passes through a hole 622 in the valve sleeve 638, hole 620 in the slide, and opening 616 in the annular sleeve 606 so that the resilient tube 602 is forced radially inwardly to grip the end of the cigarette group. Alternatively the internal dia'meter of the resilient tube may be made smaller than that of the cigarette group in which case suction is applied instead of compressed air to increase its diameter during entry and exit of the cigarette group, Fig. 5 (not shown). The testing air current is applied through holes 638 and 634 to the chamber 604 and hence to the end of the cigarette group being tested. In a modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), the resilient sealing member consists of a ring of deformable material, the internal diameter of which may be varied by axially applied pressure. 1,114,309. [Also in Division A4] A cushion pad, comprising a knee pad or a pad secured to a bust-bodice or pants, includes a cover (1 or 5) with a heatinsulating packing of sheepswool in which is embedded a heat-conducting wire (2 or 6) with free, bent ends 3, 4 or 7, 8), the wire extending substantially throughout the packing. The wire may be of spiral or sinuous form.
