Abstract
A briquette for the addition of magnesium to molten metal contains in percentage by weight .Mg.4-20 .Fe.0-25 .C.0-2 .Cu.0-20 .Ni.balance and has a porosity of 20%-50% with an average pore size of 50 - 500 microns. It preferably also has a surface area: volume ratio of at least 8:1. The briquettes are formed from carbonyl nickel powder having a particle size not exceeding 10 microns, iron if present not exceeding 150 microns and magnesium at least 40 microns but preferably not exceeding 1000 microns; the compacts are desirably formed by isostatic compression, as by the use of moulds formed by cup-like cavities in a slab of rubber, a number of such slabs being stacked together in a rubber casing. Sintering must be of the liquid-phase type, and is therefore carried out in the range 510 DEG - 650 DEG C., while to avoid cracking the subsequent cooling rate should be at least 1% per minute. As exemplified compaction is carried out at 30000 p.s.i. and sintering at 540 DEG C. in hydrogen. The briquettes are primarily used in the production of S.G. iron, but may also be used with nickel, copper or ferrous base alloys for deoxidation, desulphurization, or alloying.
