Abstract

1,191,056. Polymer impregnated wood. NESTE OY. 2 April, 1968 [4 April, 1967], No. 15898/68. Heading C3P. A material comprising a piece of wood containing synthetic polymer is prepared by impregnating the piece of wood throughout with a polymerizable impregnating solution which contains as polymerizable substance an unsaturated monomer or a mixture containing in addition to the monomer an unsaturated polymer soluble in the monomer, and which solution further contains as catalyst a free radical catalyst which is able to initiate polymerization at a temperature below 110‹ C.; heating the impregnated piece of wood to the polymerization temperature either by highfrequency heating or in a heating chamber with the aid of heating an inert circulating gas; and after polymerization has started, cooling the piece of wood by the expedient of cooling an inert circulating gas, the maximum temperature peak produced in the piece of wood during the polymerization being kept down, in addition to the expedient of cooling the circulating gas, with the aid of one or more substances which are contained in the impregnating solution and which act so as to retard the polymerization and consequently retard the generation of heat inside the piece of wood. In the examples, pieces of dried birch wood are impregnated with an unsaturated polyester resin derived from phthalic acid, maleic acid and butene glycol, styrene, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, polybutadiene, divinyl benzene acrylic acid and as polymerization retarding agents crystal resin, sulphurous crystal resin, 2,6- dimethyl-2,4,6-octatriene and copper naphthenate.
