Abstract

[Also in Division B4] An apparatus for sizing and removing material from the circumferential surface of a circular object e.g. a tyre comprises a band knife 113 mounted on a frame 11, a table 41 for supporting a tyre movable towards and away from and in an arc with respect to the knife and a template 95 fixed relative to the table and adapted to control the path of travel of the latter via a follower 61 secured to a plate 49 on the table. The table 41 is slidably mounted on a plate 31 which is pivotally mounted on a support 66, the latter being movable on slides 69 fixed to the frame; the plate 31 is rotatable about the pivot bearing 93 by means of a motor 89 which rotates a sprocket engaging with a chain 85 secured to the support 66. The template 95 is secured to the pivot bearing 93 and includes a pair of wings 169, 171 urged together by means of a spring 173. The distance apart of the wings is controlled by a wedge 183 raised and lowered via a screw 191, Fig. 7, driven by an electric motor 195, the motor also drives via a gear-box 189, a second screw 219 which is connected to a sensor 213. The tyre to be cut is mounted on an expansible hub 145 which is rotatable by means of a motor 147. In operation, a tyre is mounted on the hub and inflated, its diameter being checked by a feeler 157 adapted to contact the periphery of the tyre and, via a cable device, actuate a scale 155 visible through a window 153. A push-button is then operated so as to cause the support 66 to be moved by a ram 65 until a switch 63 on the follower 61 is actuated by a pin 175 on the template. A motor 59 is thereby actuated so as to move the table 41 forwardly until the periphery of the tyre contacts a plunger 133 of a switch 137. The table movement is then stopped and the motor 195 energized to move the sensor 213 towards the side of the tyre, the template then being adjusted simultaneously by the upward movement of the wedge; upon contact of the sensor with the tyre the motor 195 is stopped. The table is then moved to bring the follower out of contact with the template and the motor 89 operated so as to rotate the table assembly around the support to a start position. Upon moving the follower back into contact with the template, a drive motor for the knife and the motor 147 are started. The motor 89 is then started thereby rotating the periphery of the tyre about the knife 113. The rotary movement of the table is stopped when the latter contacts a switch 101. If required a buffing device having dressing wheels 237 may be incorporated in the apparatus.
