Abstract

1,179,161. Automatic position control. VICKERS Ltd. Jan.12, 1968 [Jan. 20, 1967], No.3230/67. Heading G3R. In an electron beam welding system, power is reduced and the beam scanned transversely to the weld periodically so that any error in the mean position of the beam is detected by the timing of secondary emission from the weld line which is utilized to correct the beam position automatically. In Fig. 1, two plates 1a, 1b are supported on a continuously moving trolley 22 in a vacuum chamber 21 so that they are welded together along a line 2 by an electron beam 3 from a gun 4. At intervals determined by a programmer 12 the gun is biased to reduce power and deflecting coils X, Y energized by a generator 11 to move the beam slightly ahead in the welding direction to a point 15 and then to scan an area 14. The increase in secondary emission each time the beam crosses the abutment is detected by a Faraday cage 6 and compared with the time at which the scan is central when a unit 7 is gated by programmer 12. Any difference, representing error in the mean position of the beam, produces a voltage at 8 which is applied to deflecting coils 5 or Y to correct the error in readiness for the next welding interval at full power. Signals from unit 7 and scan generator 11 are applied to a television type display 9 and a cathode ray tube 10 which indicate the position of the abutment. A modification, more suitable when the welding line is not straight, in which the electron beam is scanned once instead of several times, is described.
