Abstract

1,172,098. Producing metals and alloys. H. WESSEL. Nov. 17, 1966, No.51556/66. Heading C7D. [Also in Division C1] In a continuous process for the production of metals, alloys, or metal compounds (see Division C1), a starting material including a metal or metallic compound is suspended in an inflammable liquid, the suspension is injected into a flame spray device to burn the inflammable liquid and form either a metal-containing product when the suspension contains metal, or a metal or metal-containing product when the suspension contains a metallic compound, and the stream of flame and metal or metal-containing product is passed down a sleeve provided with a sequence of throats for creating within the sleeve zones of high and low pressure. As shown, suitable apparatus comprises a water-cooled sleeve separated into five zones I-V by throats 12, 14, 20, 21: the sixth zone VI is a collecting chamber 26. Suspension 3 is injected as a spray by an injection agent 2 (which may be steam to produce a reducing atmosphere, i. e. water-gas, by reaction with the burning inflammable liquid) into flame 7. The products of combustion begin to separate into product particles 25 and gases in zone IV. Thus metal drops 25 are collected in chamber 26 while any slag 24 is blown out by air injected at 23 to be collected in well 27. For the production of alloys chamber 26 is omitted: zone V is then provided with a cyclone. The atmosphere in the sleeve may be made neutral or oxidizing, e. g. by admitting at the throats superheated steam, hydrocarbon, oxygen or air: fuel may also be admitted. Metal product in chamber 26 may be refined by injection of air, oxygenenriched air or argon through perforated plate 28. For the production of sintered bodies, chamber 26 may take the form of open boxes on a conveyer, each with a perforated floor. In the Examples (1) lead is produced by using a starting material lead oxide plus a glass composition suspended in benzene-lanoline, and (2) lead-titanium is produced as in (1), but by replacing the benzene-lanoline by butyl titanate as the inflammable liquid.
