Abstract
1367732 Steel production from ore dust FRIED KRUPP GmbH 30 March 1972 [3 April 1971] 15145/72 Heading C7D [Also in Divisions F4 and H5] Apparatus for making steel from finely ground rich ores utilizes a plasma burner 4 extending into a melting hearth 6. The ore is fed to a hopper 1, atomized and carried through a tubular fluidized bed in the transport stage 2 by reduction gas. The reduction gas is obtained from cracking natural gas and furnace waste gas in a cracking tube (35) Fig.2 (not shown) the ore dust being raised to the required reduction temperature as it travels through the stage 2, subsequently passing to the arc plasma burner 4. The enriched mixture of ore dust and gas enters through tangential inlet 51, Fig.7 passes through spiral channels 50 and exits from opening 48. The plasma jet is produced by cathode 49, anode 52, and purified furnace waste gas supplied to combustion chamber 53 through tangential inlet 54. In other embodiments, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown) different forms of fluidized bed are used, and the cracking tube (35) may be dispensed with. The molten metal produced in the hearth 6 is refined in furnace 10 by an O 2 lance 10', and carried into an alloying furnace 16 whose it is subjected to a N 2 blast from lance 20, whence the steel runs off to a continuous casting plant 21. CaC 2 from furnace 8 is used as a slag-former, and the gas from this furnace 8 (approximately 85% CO, 15% H 2 ) is fed to the atomizer 3 and hence to the transport stage 2. Reduction gas can also be produced from coal, oil or natural gas in a cracking tube by reactor waste heat from a nuclear reactor. Suction channels 12, 13 remove LD dust and gas, the dust being returned to the hopper and the gas recycled.
