Abstract
1,168,039. Pipe joints; plastics pipes; Joint-making packing. HEPWORTH IRON CO. Ltd. 13 Sept., 1968, No. 43564/68. Headings F2B, F2G and F2P. A method of providing one end of a synthetic plastics pipe with a coupling socket comprises sleeving the end of the pipe and heating and expanding within the length of the sleeved end, and heating and turning in at least the end of the outer wall of the socket to form an inwardlyfacing recess 6 for housing a seating ring 7. As shown, the end 23 of the pipe is bevelled, or curved, to correspond to the curvature of the turned-in end 22 of the, preferably, external sleeve 21. The rubber sealing ring 7 is held in place by combined locking and blocking rings 8, 13 of unmodified unplasticized polyvinylchloride and includes a sealing head 10 having bevelled sides 14, 16 blending into a rounded periphery 17; the back 18 of the head is also rounded to assist rolling of the head into the space 15 upon insertion of a pipe into the socket.
