Abstract

1,009,219. Coupling for ceramic pipes. H. HAWKINS Ltd. May 27, 1963 [March 12, 1962], No. 9354/62. Heading F2G. A method of forming a joint between a pair of pipes formed of ceramic material comprises the steps of expanding the ends of a sleeve of thermo-plastic material, the original internal diameter of which is less than the external diameter of the pipes to be joined, the expansion of the ends being carried out at a temperature which is less than the temperature at which the thermoplastic material is plastic, inserting the ends of the pipes into the expanded ends of the sleeve so that the pipes abut against a portion intermediate the ends of the sleeve, which portion has not been expanded, and warming the sleeve so that the expanded ends tend to shrink back to their original size thus gripping the pipes. The pipe ends may be smooth or may contain a groove or an annular projection, or an 0-ring may be inserted between the sleeve and the pipe or a sealing ring may be inserted in a groove in the pipe end.
