Abstract
1,163,849. Making metal strip. CONTIMET G.m.b.H. 3 Nov., 1967 [9 Nov., 1966], No. 50150/67. Heading B3A. [Also in Division C7] Titanium strip, in commercially pure form in either alpha stabilized alpha type or alpha stabilized alpha-beta type alloy, is produced by; hot rolling the metal at an initial temperature to ensure that the reduction is largely within the alpha-beta field; heating the resulting strip above the beta transus to transform the metal to beta phase rapidly cooling the strip to a temperature below the beta transus to produce an acicular structure; and rolling and annealing the strip to give a completely recrystallized structure. In an example a 5% Al, 2.5% Sn, balance Ti, alloy having a beta transus of 1900 F. 25 F. was hot rolled from 2100 F. to give a strip of 0.135 inch thickness. After heating for 3 mins. at 1950 F., water quenching followed to give an acicular structure. Cycles of 15% reduction at room temperature, each followed by line annealing for 5 mins. at 1600 F., produced the desired recrystallization. Similar examples, differing mainly in rolling reductions and annealing conditions, are described for alloys of 8% Al, 1% M, 1% Va, balance Ti, and 6% Al, 4% V, balance Ti.
