Abstract

1,153,225. Vehicle steering columns. BORG-WARNER CORP. 18 Jan., 1967, No. 2740/67. Heading B7H. [Also in Divisions E2 and F2] A vehicle steering column is in two sections 16, 14 pivoted together at 62 and 101 and locked together in a selected relative orientation by pairs of rollers 116, 118 spring-urged into jamming engagement with cam surfaces 134, 130 and 132 of inner and outer races 114, 112 secured respectively to the upper and lower sections 16, 14, the sections 16, 14 being releasable by a hand lever 26 pivoted at 148, 158 to outer and inner roller cages 120, 122 which are counter-rotated by movement of the lever 26 so as to force the rollers free of the surfaces 134, 130 and 132 by means of cage portions 155, 145. A torsion spring 76 biases the steering wheel 22 upwards on section 16, and a spring 160 may or may not be provided at one or both sides of the lever 26. The lever 26 may be pivoted (at 106) to the cover-plate 98, or be floating. The separation of each pair of rollers 116, 118 may be limited by a segment which bears on the surface 134 and has lugs extending through windows 154 of the inner cage 122. In another embodiment, the boss 58 is on the upper section 16 and the boss 72 on the lower section 14; and the boss 84 is on the arm 44. The cam surfaces 130, 132 are on the inner race 114, and the surface 134 on the outer race 112. In a modification, the lever 26 is U-shaped and is pivoted to the lower section 14 to extend laterally outwards, and has yokes engaging lugs on the cages.
