Abstract

1,168,191. Rack-and-pinion gearing. CAM GEARS Ltd. 29 April, 1968, No. 20162/68. Heading F2Q. In a rack and pinion steering gear in which the rack 6 is maintained in engagement with the pinion 1 by a resiliently biased slipper block 7, frictional resistance and consequent wear between the rack 6 and slipper block 7 is reduced by an intermediate ball 8, or waisted roller (13) (Fig. 2, not shown), or reel (16) (Fig. 3, not shown) or cylindrical roller (19) (Fig. 4, not shown) freely seated between correspondingly formed surfaces 11 &c. on the rack 6 and block 7, the various forms of rollers in Figs. 2 to 4 being additionally or alternatively rotatably carried by axle pins (15, 18 or 22) in the slipper block 7, which block engages each side of the rack at its inner ends 10a, 10b whereby lateral movement of the rack 6 relative the pinion 1 is restrained. The resilient bias on the slipper block may be either a spring 12 as shown or alternatively a rubber mounting.
