Abstract

1,150,494. Hot pressed tungsten bodies. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. Oct. 26, 1967 [March 13, 1967], No. 48844/67. Heading C7D. Hot pressed W ingots having a density greater than 98% theoretical are produced by compacting degassed green compacts to at least 1 kilobar and heating to 900‹ -1400‹C. while maintaining the pressure, and then reducing the temperature and pressure at such a rate that the pressure is reduced to atmospheric prior to the temperature reaching 700‹C. For compacting pressures of 2-15 kilobars the pressure is reduced at a rate of 1000 p.s.i/sec. and for pressures of 15-50 kilobars the rate is more than 10<SP>4</SP> p.s.i/sec. A conventional piston cylinder compaction apparatus Fig. 5 (not shown) is used for pressures of 2-15 kilobars and a belt type high pressure apparatus Fig. 4 is used for pressures of 15-50 kilobars. The W metal powder is first pressed at 100, 000-150, 000 p.s.i, degassed at 200‹C. in vacuum and then pre-sintered at 900‹C. in H2. After machining to size the compact is enclosed in a Mo container, vacuum degassed at 500‹C. and hermetically sealed under vacuum. The sealed compact 13 is then placed in compression chamber 10 which is laterally circumscribed by steel belt 11, steel pistons 12 projecting into the central opening. Graphite furnace 16 surrounds the compact which is insulated by jacket 17 of boron nitride. Compaction is effected by placing the assembly in a press.
