Abstract

1,148,601. Refining molten metals. STEEL CO. OF WALES Ltd. Feb. 8, 1967 [Feb.16, 1966; Feb.1 1967], Nos.6847/66 and 4924/67. Heading C7D. A bath of metal is refined by injecting into the vessel a flame fed by streams of oxygen and liquid carbonaceous fuel the proportions thereof being adjusted to bring about substantially complete combustion while the flame is so positioned that the products of combustion, but not the flame itself, impinge on the bath. The fuel may be a hydrocarbon oil and an excess of oxygen, which may amount to 150% to 200%, or as much as 1000% over the amount stoichio-metrically required for combustion, may be employed. The process is particularly applicable to the production of steel in a converter or open hearth furnace.
