1145382 Super-conducting cables LICENTIA PATENT-VERWALTUNGS GmbH 22 April 1966 [23 April 1965] 17703/66 Headings H1A and A4D In a super-conducting cable super-conductive conductors L immersed in liquid helium He are surrounded by a number of hollow cylindrical envelopes in the form of flexible, extensible and corrugated tubes, for example, made from metal and/or plastics material, which are held apart by spacers of low heat conductivity and which form between them at least one space which is evacuated or filled with liquefied gas. The low heat conductivity spacers, shown in Fig. 3, as shaded triangles, may be in the form of helically wound wires or bands of plastics material of varying cross-section, Fig. 4 (not shown), such that contact between the spacers and the corrugated tube occurs only at spaced points. The spaces between adjacent envelopes may be evacuated as indicated at V 1 , V 2 or filled with a liquefied gas such as nitrogen as indicated at N 2 . A superinsulator, such as glass or plastics fibres or metal foils, may at least partially fill the evacuated spaces. The smaller of two adjacent corrugated tubes, to the outside of which the spacers may be affixed, may be such that it can be drawn into the larger one on site. The flexible nature of the corrugated tubes enables them to be manufactured in long lengths, e.g. 1500 metres, and transported to site wound on large drums.
