Abstract
1190949 Super-conducting cables SIEMENS A G 18 Aug 1967 [18 Aug 1966] 38269/67 Headings H1A and A4D In a super-conductor power cable, the superconductor is subdivided into component conductors stranded or braided and separated by insulation or semi-conductor so that the transverse resistance between the components is so great for one half the length of lay that the transverse current between the components, caused by current fluctuations, is small compared to these current fluctuations. As shown in Fig. 1, a super-conductor cable comprises super-conductor components 3, each having a normally conducting sheath 4 acting as a parallel stabilizing conductor, and a semiconducting sheath 5, the components being stranded, or braided, on a support tube 1, which may be conducting or insulating, and which has a duct 2 for liquid helium. A polyethylene sheath 6 and conductive layer 7 surround each tube 1, and the lead and return are placed in a tubular cryostat consisting of metal tubes 8, 9 and 10, having a space 12 filled with superinsulation, a duct 13 for liquid nitrogen and an evacuated insulating space 14. In a modification Fig. 8 (not shown), the support tube 1 is insulating and the semi-conductive layer 5 omitted. In another embodiment Fig. 2 (not shown), the support tube 1 acts as the stabilizing conductor and is separated from the components 3 by a semi-conductive sheath (15). In further embodiments, semi-circular support tubes (16) Fig. 3 (not shown) are used, and strip-like component conductors (17) on a supporting strip (18) are used, with a semi-conductive layer (19) between the component conductors and the support tube, or each component may have its own semiconducting sheath (20) Fig. 5 (not shown). In another embodiment Fig. 6 (not shown), superconducting components (22) each having a normally conducting aluminium strip (23) and a semiconducting sheath (24) are stranded on a resilient cylindrical support tube (21) formed by a helix of insulated steel strip, and spacer strips (25) helically wound around the two layer strips (22/23) prevent contact with a corrugated sealing tube (26).
