Abstract

1,142,014. Hydrofoil craft. DOWTY ROTOL Ltd. 5 Sept., 1966 [3 Sept., 1965], No. 37748/65. Heading B7A. [Also in Division G3] The hydrofoils of a hydrofoil craft are controlled by respective inertia devices which respond to vertical movements of the craft. Each inertia device senses the vertical movement of that section of the craft to which its corresponding hydrofoil is connected. As disclosed, a craft has one hydrofoil below the forward part thereof on the central longitudinal axis and two hydrofoils below the rearward part thereof on opposite sides of the said axis. Each hydrofoil has a fixed leading edge 11 and a pivoted trailing edge 12, the latter being controlled by a piston 15. The piston is controlled by a spool valve 25 which, in turn, is controlled by a flapper 39 connected to inertia mass 42. The flapper provides a control pressure in chamber 34 of the spool valve. A second flapper 52 provides a feed-back control pressure in chamber 45 of the spool valve, flapper 52 being connected to the hydrofoil by linkage 54, cam 55, follower 56 and springs 57. The flapper may also receive a signal corresponding to the mean depth of the hydrofoil, a manually derived signal and a signal for automatic banking during turning.
