1,038,783. Electric selective signalling. GENERAL DATA CORPORATION. Jan. 30, 1963 [Feb. 5, 1962], No. 13142/66. Divided out of 1,038,781. Heading G4H. A multiplier comprises a first digital-toanalogue converter 701, Fig. 1 (not shown), arranged to receive a first digital number A and a reference voltage and a second digitalto-analogue converter 704 receiving a second digital number B and, as reference voltage, the output 703 of the first converter so that the output of the second converter is the product of the two numbers. An analogue-to-digital converter 706 produces a corresponding digital number C. For dividing number C, Fig. 2 (not shown), by number A to obtain the result B, the number C is applied to converter 803 and the output compared with that from digital to analogue converter 802. The input to this converter is the product from multiplier 801 of A and the unknown B. The difference signal is applied to increase the output of amplifier 804. This is applied to analogue-to-digital converter 805, the output of which is applied as number B to multiplier A. The system achieves a balance when A x B = C. For multiplication one number may be divided into higher and lower parts and each part multiplied separately with the other number and the products added as described in Specification 1,038,782. The digitalto-analogue converters 701, 704 and the analogue-to-digital converter 706 are as described in the parent Specification.
