Abstract
1, 035, 735. Washing machines. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Aug. 24, 1964 [Sept. 23, 1963], No. 34510/64. Heading D1A. In a washing machine having a screw or spiral type agitator 30 which oscillates about a vertical axis within a spinnable clothes basket 26 mounted in a tub, restraining means 34 are provided which, during agitation, prevent movement of the basket in one direction while allowing it to move freely in the other direction. As shown, agitator 30 and perforated basket 26 are secured respectively to an oscillatable drive shaft 18 and a rotatable drive shaft 22. Rotation, in one direction, of basket 26 during rotation is prevented by over-running clutch 34 which comprises a coil spring, preferably of square section wire, whose ends are secured respectively to the stationary housing and the rotary gear frame 16 so that rotation in one direction causes tightening of the spring round the frame 16.
