Abstract

[Also in Division H2] In a washing machine in which the clothes bowl having a vertical inclined or horizontal axis is adapted to be rotated in one direction for spin drying and in which the bowl, or an agitator co-axial therewith, is oscillated for washing, the drive is effected by a single motor arranged concentrically to the bowl axis. As shown in Fig. 1 the rotor 23 of the motor 24 is directly coupled to the shaft 22 of the bowl 20 within an outer tub 21 and the windings 25 of the stator are controlled by a reversing switch 26 actuated by a cam 27 on the shaft 22. Thus, during washing, after rotation of the bowl through a predetermined angle in one direction the switch 26 is actuated to reverse the motor to provide the required oscillatory movement. For spin-drying the switch 26 is put out of action either by arresting the cam 27 which is driven through a slippable clutch or by electrical switch means Fig. 10 (not shown), so that rotation in a single direction continues. The electrical switch means can at the same time reduce the number of poles of an induction motor so that the speed is increased for the spin drying operation. Such switch means may be actuated by a relay under control of a timer of an automatic machine. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the rotor of the motor is directly coupled to an oscillatory agitator 31 in the bowl 20 and the bowl is driven in one direction for spin-drying through a spring coil clutch 30.
