Abstract

1,035,680. Overhead travelling cranes. ANDERSTON CLYDE ENGINEERS Ltd. Oct. 26, 1964 [Nov. 5, 1963; Feb. 12, 1964], Nos. 43552/63 and 5868/64. Heading B8B. A self-erecting overhead crane comprises a cross-beam 11 which is supported by and movable up and down pillars 14 mounted on bogies 12. Each pillar comprises a plurality of detachable superimposed sections, Fig. 4, formed with racks 13c and with channels 13b<SP>1</SP>. The cross-beam 11 is provided, at each end, with a motor 15, which drives, through worm gearing, pinions engaging the racks 13c, and with guide rollers, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), which engage in the channels 13b<SP>1</SP> and which prevent the weight of the beam from spreading the pillars apart. The beam 11 is also provided with I-beams 11a, 11c for lifting tackle 11b, 11d and with sockets (not shown) at the centre and ends of the beam for horizontal slewing jibs. To erect the crane, the pillar sections are stacked on the beam 11, the bogies 12 having been placed on their tracks with the lowermost pillar sections secured in place and engaging the ends of the beam. Additional sections may then be placed one on each pillar whereafter the beam is lifted by the motors 15 to the top of the added pillar sections. In a modification, the bogies 12, instead of having end sections pivoted to a centre section, Figs. 7-9 (not shown), are provided with castoring wheels. In a further modification, Fig. 10 (not shown), the pillar sections are rectangular instead of triangular in plan view.
