Ship's cargo handling apparatus comprises a gantry 12, extending the full width of the ship 10, supported by vertical structures 13 running on rails 11 adjacent the ship's sides. Two travelling luffing jib cranes 15 on the gantry 12 each have a range, indicated by arrows 16, of about half the length of the gantry. Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates a gantry 12 supported on vertical structures 13a incorporating hydraulic rams 17 for raising and lowering the gantry. Rails 11a are shown in an alternative position close to hatches 14 so that the gantry 12 has overhanging extensions 12a. The gantry may be in two parts each rotatable about its associated vertical support. These parts may overlap, Fig. 3 (not shown), or have a gap between, Fig. 4 (not shown), to enable the gantry to pass masts or funnels &c. Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) illustrate a gantry 12d supported at one end by a vertical structure 13e and at the other end rotatable about a vertical axis on supports 13d. Legs 20 pivoted to the gantry 12d may be lowered for extra support when the gantry is rotated to extend over an adjacent ship or wharf (Fig. 5) or along the length of the ship 10 (Fig. 6). Fig. 7 (not shown) illustrates a gantry in two parts 12f, 12g. Part 12f is fixed to vertical structures 13f, 13g while part 12g rotatably supports part 12g. One crane may run on part 12f and a second crane on part 12g. Layouts of a ship with its cargo handling gear are given in Figs. 8, 9 (not shown).
