Abstract

1,031,689. Welding by fusion. VYSSHEE TEKNICHESKOIE UCHILLISCHE " N. E. BAUMAN." Dec. 3, 1963, No. 47608/63. Heading B3R. [Also in Division H1] Workpieces are welded with an electron beam by charging them into containers which are moved, one after the other, up to a normally sealed aperture in a vacuum chamber containing an electron gun, the aperture being automatically opened each time for welding to take place. A workpiece is charged into each of a series of containers 4 mounted around the periphery of a rotatable table 13, a motor-driven cam-shaft 17 causing intermittent rotation of the table to bring each container in turn beneath the aperture 7 in the vacuum chamber 3, raising the container against the base-plate 5 and opening the seal 6, to evacuate the container. A signal thereupon passes from a pressure gauge to the control grid of an electron gun 2 and its deflection coils, such that an electron beam is directed through the aperture 7 to move over and weld the workpiece.
