In a rug cleaning machine through which a rug is conveyed on a backing support at least one massaging roll having radially projecting fingers is movable transversely of its axis parallel to the table of the rug to cause its fingers to knead the nap of the rug, whilst washing solution is supplied in sufficient quantity to wash the massaging roll and the nap being treated thereby. The machine illustrated comprises a pair of massaging rolls 126 mounted on a carriage 118 which is reciprocated horizontally above a table 25 along which rugs are conveyed by endless belts 31. The rugs are fed into the machine by a freely rotating or power driven roll 23 having radially projecting pins 22. Before reaching the massaging rolls 126 the rugs are treated with jets of hot washing solution from nozzles 151, and between the rolls 126 are similarly treated from nozzles 185 which move to and fro with the carriage 118 longitudinally of the rugs and are also reciprocated transversely of the latter. On leaving the massaging rolls 126 the rugs are raised by jets 190 and drawn against a roll 71 before being treated with further rinsing liquid from nozzles 194 reciprocated transversely of the rugs. The rinsing liquid is squeezed from the rugs by resilient rolls 73, 74, and the rugs are finally formed into rolls 21a by a roller 90 having projecting pins 91. The massaging rolls 126 are provided with assemblies of resilient ribbed peripheral rings, the ribs of adjacent rings being out of alignment with each other; and whilst being reciprocated with the carriage 118 the rolls 126 are rotated either by the engagement of pinions thereon with a fixed endless chain or by a driving motor.
