Abstract
<PICT:1024713/C6-C7/1> A method of cooling a rod comprises forming the rod from a rod rolling mill into a series of nonconcentric rings at transformation temperatures, supporting them on a plurality of supports, passing a cooling fluid (preferably air under pressure) through the rings and collecting them as a bundle. The rod may be first cooled from the rolling temperature (e.g. 1800 DEG F.) to above the transformation temperature at 1200-1500 DEG F. (e.g. by water cooling). In Fig. 2 the rod 4 passes through a pipe 6, which may be water cooled and into the laying head 10 which deposits the coils 20 on the conveyer 12. The conveyer passes the coils under the influence of blown air to be collected as coil 22. In order to cool all the metal in the rod at the same rate, the flow of the cooling fluid may be regulated by means of valves as shown in Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown) or by means of a hood arrangement as described in connection with Fig. 3 (not shown).
