Abstract

1,158,244. Combined cooling towers and air-cooled heat exchangers or condensers. MASCHINENBAU-AG. BALCKE. 23 Feb., 1968 [24 Feb., 1967], No. 8915/68. Headings F4K and F4S. In apparatus for cooling fluid which has been heated while cooling industrial plant, e.g. steam from a turbine 1, a first portion of the fluid passes by a pipe 2 into a water-cooled heat exchanger 4 utilizing water cooled in a cooling tower 8 by direct contact with air, and the second portion of the fluid passes by a pipe 3 into a heat exchanger 10 cooled by atmospheric air, which air is conveyed to the cooling tower to cool the cooling water. In a modification a portion of the fluid condensed in the heat exchanger 4 may be utilized in the exchanger 10 and thereafter used for injection cooling in the exchanger 4, or the water used for cooling in the exchanger 4 passes in series through the exchanger 10 and cooling tower. The heat exchangers 4, 10 may act as steam condensers. The cooling tower has an annular cooling part 29 comprising irrigation surfaces 39 over which cooling water from a cooling condenser is distributed by a pipe 37 and system 38 to a collecting vessel 40 and surrounding the part 29 is a heat exchanger 27 or 28 through which cooling air from ambient atmosphere passes to flow over the surfaces 39 under the influence of a fan 30.
