Abstract

1019921 Thermal switches; tumbler switches C B ANNABLE [27 Feb 1963] 7795/63 Headings A4A B 1 and B2 [Also in Division H5] A double or single pole switch comprises normally-open contacts 13, one of which is carried by a blade engaged by an extension 21 of a doubleended member 12. A spiral spring, Fig.5 (not shown) gives the member 12 a snap action. The switch controls an element for heating liquids in a removable vessel and is normally operated manually, but a mechanism comprising a spring-loaded pivoted arm 30 and a rod 29 which detects the presence of the vessel moves the member 12 to the "off" position when the vessel is removed and locks it thus until the vessel is replaced. In addition, the switch is put to "off" by a bi-metallic strip, acting on extension arm 41, when the liquid boils; the bi-metallic strip is housed in a tube 37 into which the vapour is ducted. The tube is open to atmosphere at both ends to ensure rapid cooling of the strip.
