1436371 Heating liquids by electricity C B ANNABLE 13 March 1974 [21 March 1973] 13472/73 Heading A4A [Also in Division H1] An electric liquid-heater comprises a metal frusto-conical vessel 2 removably mounted below a wall-mounting unit 3 having a depending electric heating element 8 surrounded by a tubular guard 25. When the liquid boils, vapour from inwards of guard 25 passes through vent 39 and is deflected up through duct 37 to atmosphere causing bi-metallic strip 36 to break the supply to element 8. Condensate drains through duct 38 which terminates in or directly above the space between guard 25 and the inside surface of the jug or vessel. As shown, bi-metallic strip 36 when operated by steam from the boiling water pushes nose 41a to push double-pole or single-pole, snap-action, manually-resettable mains supply switch 12 to its off (solid line) position. By rotating jug 2, its abutments (22) engage abutments 24 on annular flange 23 joined to the underside of a platform 7. Unit 3 has a vertically sliding member 29 with a horizontal lower portion engaging a slot 34 in jug handle 40. The upper end of member 29 engages lever 30 pivoted (at 31) and sprung at 32 or weighted. If switch 12 is moved to its on position when no jug is present or when a fitted jug has insufficient water, lever 30 bears on an extension 21 of switch 12 to move it to its off position. In use the greater part of the heat is concentrated in the lower part of the element to enable small quantities of water to be heated.
