[Also in Division F4] In a domestic water heating installation (see Division F3-F4) a tank is heated e.g. by an immersion heater, which is controlled by two thermostats, a first thermostat being arranged to sense the temperature in a comparatively large volume of water at the upper part of the tank, and a second thermostat clamped to the outside of the tank to sense through the wall of the tank, the temperature in a comparatively smaller volume of water in the upper part of the tank. The second thermostat shown is clamped to the tank so that recess 19 containing bimetallic strip 23 is exposed to the tank surface. When a small volume of hot water is required, the temperature is selected by means of knob 36. When this temperature is attained, the bimetallic strip 23 engages plunger 25 which operates a contact arm displacing mechanism 44 which separates contacts 42, 43 thus breaking the circuit to the heater. As illustrated in Fig. 2 (not shown), the thermostats are connected in series and whichever has the lower temperature setting will override the other. A switch may be incorporated to short circuit the second thermostat. A fusible link 46 may be added to microswitch 26 which is adapted to melt if the thermostat exceeds a predetermined temperature.
