General arrangement; forms of package; adjustment for different sizes.-A web 16 (Fig. 1) is drawn into moulds 11 on a carrier 10 by suction, the compartments so formed are filled with material from hoppers 18, and a second web 21, which has been made tacky by a liquid applied at 24, is sealed over the first web. In the arrangement illustrated a drum 10 has pairs of moulds 39, 40 (Fig. 4), the larger moulds receiving detergent powder and the smaller moulds a blueing powder. Each mould is formed by a plastic insert secured by a screw 41 and spaced from pockets in the drum by spacing washers 42. The lands between and around the pockets are polished to provide better adhesion to the film. The plastic inserts are a loose fit in the pockets to permit the vacuum to reach the web. Rotary valves associated with the hollow interior of the drum shaft control the application of suction. A solvent may be added to the web 16, to ensure its adhesion to the drum, and the roller 17, which is spring-pressed against the drum, may be heated. The film may be of polyvinyl alcohol and the solvent may be water. The drive to the drum may be continuous or intermittent. Cutting and separating packages from drum.- The edges of the web are pushed inwardly, to separate them from the drum, by an inclined roller 27 (Fig. 7). Delivery of the packages to a conveyer 35 (Fig. 1) may be facilitated by admitting air to the vacuum packages 44. The web is cut longitudinally by fixed knives 28 and transversely by knives 32 rotating on a shaft 31. The knives take into grooves 33 in the drum. Delivering material.-A surplus of material is delivered to each compartment, and is then smoothed off by three resilient blades 57, 58, 59 (Fig. 1) of which the first blade 57 extends some way into the compartment to leave a void which is subsequently filled by material swept by the blades 58, 59. Alternatively the blade 57 may be replaced by a soft rubber roller. The heights of the hoppers 18 can be adjusted. Sealing webs together; applying adhesive.- Water is applied to the web 21 by a wick 64 extending from a vat 68 supplied through an adjustable float valve (not shown) to provide a constant head. The wick is mounted on pivoted arms 69 so that it normally rests against the web by its weight, but may be swung aside when the machine is stopped. The webs are pressed together by a heated roller 23.
