Abstract
412,300. Coating air propellers &c. with plastic material. SUKOHL, H., 2, Am Dianaplatz, and SCHWARZ GES., G., 44, Oraniendamm, both in Waidmannslust, Berlin. Jan. 12, 1933, No. 1073. [Class 87 (ii).] Air propellers or other articles of porous material are coated with a cellulosic material in softened or plastic state which is then subjected to uniform pressure. The propeller may first be coated with fabric or wire gauze through which the cellulosic material is forced. The surface of the propeller, and the fabric are preferably treated with a solvent before the plastic coating is applied. A propeller 1 of wood or other porous material, after being wrapped with gauze &c. 2 and treated with a solvent for the plastic coating to be subsequently applied, is wrapped with broad overlapping strips of the cellulosic material 3 which is covered with paper. The propeller thus treated is placed within a rubber &c. bag 5 sealed at 10 and coupled at the region of the propeller boss to a pipe 8 opening into the atmosphere. The propeller and bag are placed within a chamber 11 to which fluid pressure is applied. The container 11 may be dispensed with by applying a vacuum to the interior of the bag 5. The bag 5 may cover only a portion of the propeller, say one blade. The leading edge of the blade may be coated and pressure applied by an air bag 24, Fig. 6, which is strapped in position by canvas 21 and belts 22 and then inflated. The paper covering of the propeller is subsequently ground off. The cellulosic material may be brushed on &c. in liquid or viscous form, but the coating so applied is allowed to dry to a plastic state before the application of pressure. The cellulosic material may be cellulose nitrate or cellulose acetate and the solvent may be acetone or ethyl acetate. Floats or planes of aeroplanes, made of wood or similar material may be similarly treated, and where the interior of the work can be evacuated, the outer pressure applying bag, such as 5, may be omitted.
