Abstract

1,011,357. Treating exhaust gases. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. May 31, 1963 [May 27, 1962], No. 46228/61. Heading F1B. In a combustion apparatus in which exhaust gases, mixed with air, are ignited by an electric igniter, the igniter is carried by a member 19, Fig. 1, in which are formed air inlet apertures 25. The exhaust gases entering at 11 flow through passages 15, Fig. 2, to the inlet of the combustion chamber 13, the ignited gases flowing to an outlet 12 through passages 16 in heat-exchange relation with the passages 15. The igniter 20, which may be a spark plug or glow plug, is surrounded by a swirler 24 which swirls the exhaust gases mixed with the air entering at 25, which air flows from an inlet 18 through an annular space 17. In a modification the end of the member 19 is spaced away from the inlet of the combustion chamber 13.
