Abstract

An ignition device (4) is disclosed for internal combustion engines comprising a precombustion chamber (7) near the spark plug (5) and a connection (8) serving as a throttle (9) between the precombustion chamber and combustion chamber (6) of the engine. The purpose of the invention is to provide an ignition device which allows the use of normal spark plugs with only minimal structural modifications. To achieve this, the throttle line (8) is at least as long as the distance (14) between the ignition electrode and the start of the throttle line. It is thus possible to use inexpensive spark plugs which are mass-produced. Flowing through several gas lines, the mixture reaches the central electrode of the plug or a large duct becomes narrow in the region of the central electrode and in the outflow direction a high speed is achieved in the direction of flow by the Laval nozzle effect, with the result that the ignited gas leads to quick and complete combustion of the main gas mixture.
