Abstract

Heading B7L [Also in Division F2] In an improvement in a braking system for railway vehicles (Division F2) disclosed in Specification 868,965 in which a monitor brake shoe 20 is adapted to engage frictionally the periphery of a wheel rim of the vehicle such that when such engagement takes place the shoe is permitted a limited angular movement in either direction to actuate a main brake 33 associated with the wheel or axle, the monitor brake shoe 20 is mounted on a bifurcated support member 18 slidable on a fulcrum block 12 in a radial direction and rotatable through an arc therewith on a non-rotatable axle box 13 when the monitor shoe is engaged against the wheel rim. In operation, when the brake operating rod 31 is pulled to rotate an intermediate brake lever 25 pivoted to the vehicle frame 28 at 26 a bell crank lever 22 pivoted to the support member 18 bears at one end 23 against the fulcrum block and moves the bifurcated support member 18 downwards to move the monitor brake shoe 20 against the rim of the wheel 10. When the monitor brake 20 is applied it tends to move with the wheel and rotates the support member 18 to cause actuation of the main brake 33, in the form of a disc brake, through linkage 35, 32 and cam means (not shown). The brake applying force may be varied automatically according to the load on the vehicle by permitting the intermediate lever 25 to move downwardly relatively to the bell crank lever 22 to increase the brake applying force when the vehicle load is increased.
