Abstract

971,473. Track brakes. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. Jan. 14, 1963 [Jan. 24, 1962], No. 2644/62. Heading F2E. In a rail vehicle track retarder mechanism in which movement of the retarder wearing pieces or shoes 14 to a retarding position is accompanied by raising of the shoes 14 relatively to the associated rail 15, the shoes 14 are carried by two respective levers 12 pivoted about a common fulcrum 4, the arms of the levers extending to one side of the fulcrum 4 being spread apart by a fluid-pressure operated applying means 7 to cause the shoes 14 to approach each other, one of the levers 1 being pivoted about a second fixed fulcrum 2 disposed on one side of the common fulcrum 4 and the other lever 3 being pivoted about a third fulcrum formed by a roller 5 which can roll laterally along a fixed plate 6 on the other side of the common fulcrum 4. Due to the reaction of the roller 5 on the plate 6, the lever 1 rotates about the fixed fulcrum 2 and this action raises the common fulcrum 4 and causes the levers 3 and 1 to move in arcs to close the shoes 14 against a wheel running along the rail 15.
