Abstract
1,080,757. Regulating braking in accordance with load. GIRLING Ltd. Oct. 11, 1965 [Oct. 30, 1964; Nov. 4, 1964; Nov. 5, 1964; March 2, 1965 (2)], Nos. 44275/64, 45040/64, 45148/64, 8755/65 and 8756/65. Heading F2E. The actuating means for a rail vehicle brake comprises a lever 11 acted upon at 10 by a brake applying force and connected through mechanism to a lever 18 coupled at 17 to the brake, the mechanism incorporating a roller 16 co-operating with a surface 24 tiltable in accordance with the vehicle load to vary the mechanical advantage of the mechanism. The mechanism is shown in the brake application position, when a pivoted toothed bar 28 engages tiltable surface carrier 25 to prevent its movement; in the brake release position the lever 11 abuts a stop 32 to withdraw the bar 28. To provide some lost motion the roller 16 is clear of the surface 24 when the brake is released, the clearance being a maximum when the vehicle is unladen and reduced as the vehicle is loaded. The Specification describes the mechanism (Fig. 7, not shown) whereby a shaft is rotated in accordance with the vehicle load, and apparatus (Fig. 4, not shown), whereby the loading of two axles of the vehicle are compared and the loading of only the more lightly loaded axle is made to vary the inclination of the surface 24 and control the braking on the wheels of both axles. The brakes are operable by vacuum motor and a compresser air motor, lost motion connection linkages are described which allow the motors to operate independently.
