Apparatus for reducing the particle size of a solid in a liquid comprises a stator 30 having sections 56, 57 and 58, a rotor 66 having sections 76, 67 and 68 and spaced vibratable tines 80 depending from the rotor section 76 and integral therewith. The inner surface of stator section 56 has grooves 59, Fig. 5, and intervening teeth 60, the depth of the grooves decreasing from the top to the bottom as does the height of the teeth, the widths of which increase. Slots 63, Fig. 7, are formed in stator sections 57, 58 and have arcuate bases 64. The outer surface of rotor section 76 has grooves 82, Fig. 5, therein with intervening teeth 83 which differ in number from the teeth 60. The outer surface of rotor section 67 has grooves 87, Fig. 6. Rotor section 68 has conical surfaces 97, 98 in which are formed slots 100, Fig. 7, differing in number from the slots 63. Located on the upper face of rotor section 76 are a plurality of spaced radial vanes 77 which define an impeller for driving liquid fed into the mill to the outer perimeter thereof where it flows through the comminuting zone. Rotor section 68 is provided with spaced impeller-defining vanes 97 for promoting the flow of material through the apparatus. The stator is adjustable with respect to a base member 22, Fig. 3, and is locked in the adjusted position by means of a latch 39. Comminuted material is discharged through a pipe 30a.
