Abstract

1,003,055. Electric starting mechanism for internal-combustion engines. C.A.V. Ltd. March 31, 1964 [Jan. 14, 1963], No. 1534/63. Heading F1K. The invention relates to electric starting mechanism for internal combustion engines of the kind comprising an electric motor 1 having a rotor, which is movable axially into the correct relationship relative to the stator by magnetic forces consequent upon the energization of the field windings and a pinion 3 on one end of the rotor shaft 2, the pinion being adapted to engage with a toothed wheel 4 of an engine when the rotor is in correct relationship to the stator. According to the invention the electric starting mechanism has in combination a ferrous disc-like armature 6 rotatably connected to the end of the rotor shaft remote from the pinion and a relatively fixed cup-shaped electro-magnet core 7 containing an electromagnet winding 8 arranged to be energized when the field windings of the motor are energized whereby the action of the electromagnet upon the armature will increase the magnetic field tending to move the pinion axially into engagement with the engine wheel. Any convenient means such for example as that described in Specification 984,238 can be provided for retaining the rotor in the position in which the pinion is disengaged. The electric motor may be only energized partially until the toothed wheel on the engine is engaged by the pinion.
