Abstract

1375184 Starters for internal-combustion engines JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 6 March 1972 [26 May 1971] 17352/71 Heading F1K A starter for an internal-combustion engine includes a pinion assembly 19 carried by a rotor shaft 12 there being a helically splined connection between the rotor shaft and the pinion assembly an electromagnet 23, 24 housed within the starter casing 11 and a plunger 25 associated with the electromagnet, the plunger being non- rotably mounted within the casing and being urged to a retracted position by resilient means. Coupling means 32 connects the plunger to the pinion assembly so that movement of the plunger in response to energization of the electromagnet moves the pinion assembly towards the operative position and the coupling means incorporates a friction brake 34 operable during movement of the pinion assembly 19 towards its operative position under the action of the electromagnet to resist rotation of the pinion assembly 19 relative to the casing 11. The friction brake may include a pair of parts having frusto-conical mating surfaces. The starter rotor includes a field winding but permanent magnets could be used for generating the field.
