Abstract
A metal article composed of at least 75% magnesium is cleaned by immersing it in an aqueous solution containing nitric acid, e.g. of concentration between 0.1 and 2 N, a nitrate of ammonium, an alkali or alkaline earth metal preferably Mg(NO3)2 e.g. of concentration between 0.3 and 5 N; and a carboxylic or hydroxycarboxylic acid or a water-soluble ammonium or alkali metal salt thereof preferably glycollic acid e.g. of concentration between 0.5 and 5 N, for 0.1-10 minutes at a temperature between 18 DEG C. and 65 DEG C. Many examples of organic compounds are specified. Prior to cleaning, the article may be degreased by immersing it in an aqueous alkaline solution e.g. containing 15-30 g./l. NaOH and 22-30 g./l. Na2CO3 at a temperature of 82-93 DEG C., followed by water rinsing.
