Abstract

Novel fluorinated di-imides have the formula A-Ar-A wherein Ar represents an aromatic structure having one or more aromatic carbocyclic nuclei, A represents an imide group of the formula <FORM:1099096/C2/1> in which R is a radical containing one or more aromatic nuclei. The two carbonyl groups are attached to adjacent nuclear carbon atoms in R and the imide group is linked at the nitrogen atom to a nuclear carbon atom of Ar, or an imide group of the formula <FORM:1099096/C2/2> in which R1 is a radical containing one or more aromatic nuclei, the nitrogen atom is attached to a nuclear carbon atom of R1 and the two carbonyl groups are linked to adjacent nuclear carbon atoms in Ar, and where there is at least one fluorine atom as a nuclear substituent in Ar, R or R1. Di-imides wherein A has the first formula above are prepared from a diamine, H2N-Ar-NH2, and an acid halide R(COX)2 (where X = halogen) or the anhydride R(CO)2O, and diimides wherein A has the second formula above are prepared from a monoamino, R1NH2, and an acid halide (XCO)2-Ar-(COX)2 or the dianhydride O(CO)2Ar(CO)2O.
