Abstract
1,097,110. Cooling pistons. SPECIALLOID Ltd. Sept. 9, 1966 [Nov. 15, 1965], No. 48488/65. Heading F2T. In a piston cooled by oil or other liquid supplied to a chamber 1 on the underside of the piston crown 2, the lower wall of the chamber is formed by a strip of material 3 attached to the piston at or adjacent the level of the piston pin axis and profiled to lie closely adjacent the connecting rod small end. In the piston shown in Fig. 1, two chambers 1 are formed by steel strips 3 secured by bolts 5 to shelves 6 on the piston and separated by a gap through which cooling oil projected from a jet 7 on the connecting rod 4 passes to the underside of the crown 2 where it is diverted by an inverted ridge 9 to the respective chamber; excess oil returning to the piston interior through the clearance between the strips and the connecting rod. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the strips 3 are replaced by a single strip (3a) having an oil admission and escape opening (10) therein. Each piston-pin boss 8, Fig. 5, may be provided with a chamber 11 leading into a scraper ring groove 12 and a duct 13 leading from the chamber 11 through which oil removed by a scraper ring in groove 12 is returned to the piston interior.
