Abstract
1,175,204. Pistons. HEPWORTH & GRANDAGE Ltd. 21 March, 1967 [14 April, 1966], No. 16472/66. Heading F2T. A piston comprises a light metal head 1 including a crown 2 and integral gudgeon pin bosses 4 and a resilient skirt 6 formed by circumferentially spaced sheet metal portions 7 preferably of metal having a coefficient of thermal expansion lower than that of the light metal lead, e.g. iron or steel. The skirt 6 is secured to the head 1 solely in the region of the bosses 4 and comprises two arcuate portions 7 constituting thrust faces and interconnected by transverse portions 8 provided with openings 8a. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the portions 8 are cast into the bosses 4 and may have perforated extensions 10 and flanges 11. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4, not shown, the skirt is secured to the bosses (4) by pins (13) extending through passages (14) in the bosses and apertures (15) in the transverse portions (8) of the skirt.
