Abstract
1,230,535. Cooling pistons. SULZER BROS. Ltd. 2 Sept., 1969 [2 Sept., 1968], No. 43336/69. Heading F2T. In a piston 2 comprising a cooling chamber 3 partly filled with liquid during operation and housing a guide member 42 enclosing a passage of contracting cross-section extending axially of the piston and open at both ends to the part of the chamber outside the member, fins 43 project radially inwards from the piston wall, the coolant inlet duct 39 and outlet duct 37 communicate with the chamber 3 at points spaced by at least one fin and at least some of the fins have a port 50 therethrough in the region where the piston wall merges with the crown 38 Preferably, as shown, each fin 43 except that separating the duct 37, 39, has a port 50. The cooling chamber is closed by a cover 40 having a flange with recesses 41 therein integral with the conical guide member 42 which has radial ribs 45 on its exterior aligned with fins 43. Cooling water is supplied to and returned from the chamber through tubes 9.
