Abstract

1,095,992. Armour piercing projectiles SECRETARY OF STATE FOR DEFENCE. March 31, 1960 [April 14, 1959], No. 12706/59. Heading F3A. An armour - piercing projectile comprises a nose 1 which is mounted on a body 2 and arranged to turn relative to the body on oblique impact with a target, thus causing the axis of the body to turn towards the normal to the target. The frusto-conical part 4 of the body has a part-spherical tip 5 which mates with a corresponding recess in the nose to form a ball joint. The sheath 3 is in two parts joined at 6. In Fig. 2 (not shown), a small cup is interposed between the nose and the body. The nose may be made of sintered tungsten, high strength steel, or tungsten alloy, and the body of hardened steel or tungsten carbide. The intermediate cup and sheath may be of mild steel. In Fig. 2 the body has a front part of tungsten carbide and a rear part of sintered tungsten. The sheath may be omitted, in which case the nose and the body are brazed together. The projectile may be a sub-projectile to be carried in a discarding sabot or a full-bore projectile provided with a driving band.
