Abstract

Isoprene is recovered from a C5 mixture containing cyclopentadiene by a fractional distillation in which liquid is removed from an intermediate point where the cyclopentadiene content is higher than the feed, subjecting it to conditions which dimerize the cyclopentadiene and returning it to an intermediate point of the distillation and recovering isoprene overhead. The feed may first be subjected to a predimerization treatment and distillation. The withdrawn liquid is treated at 100-160 DEG C. and 10-30 atmospheres for 10 minutes to 6 hours. The distillation column may contain 60-200 theoretical plates.
