Abstract
Isoprene is recovered from C5 fractions also containing cyclopentadiene and cis- and trans-pentadiene-1,3 and minor amounts of cyclopentane, cyclopentene and acetylenes, by extractive distillation using N-methypyrrolidone as solvent. A C5 fraction obtained from pyrolysis of benzene is separated in separator 2 into a pentane-pentene fraction 3 and a diene <PICT:1072687/C4-C5/1> fraction 4 which is introduced in vapour form into column A. Solvent preferably containing 5-15% of water is introduced through pipe 5. Isoprene containing cyclopentane and/or cyclopentene is obtained overhead and distilled in column B to obtain pure isoprene in line 7. A cyclopentadiene fraction is recovered as vapour a few plates above the sump of column A and solvent is purified in column C to remove residual hydrocarbons before recycle.
