Abstract

A potentially elastic thread comprises a core of continuous filament spandex yarn and a cover yarn of less elastic staple fibres, the twist factor of the thread being at least 4.5 and the spandex yarn constituting from 5 to 20% by weight of the thread. It is stated that the thread has an elasticity of less than 10% but that on heat treatment either before or after being made up into textile articles the full elastic potential is realised. Suitable treatment comprises immersing the thread under little or no tension in hot water or steam. As described a plurality of rovings of viscose rayon staple fibres are fed together with a stretched spandex yarn to the nip of a pair of rollers and from thence to a ring-spinner. The thread produced is doubled. Specific examples are given.
